Kilauea has been erupting primarily from two vents (north and south) in Halema'uma'u. In this photo you can feel the Hawaiian goddess Pele. She is a strong figure in Hawaiian lore and decided to rest on the Big Island of Hawai'i. She erupts when she feels the need to make her presence known and reform the island. Hawaiians often clean the house and leave offerings called ho'okupu along the crater to honor her.
