Color theory is the foundation of confident, expressive art—and this engaging, hands-on class is designed to make learning it both fun and approachable. In a relaxed, stress-free environment, students will explore how color truly works by building their own color wheel from scratch using the three primary colors.
All supplies are included, and each student will receive their own artist pad notebook, and informational handouts, which we’ll use throughout class. This book can continue on as an art journal, sketchbook, or even a plein air companion, making it both a strong foundation and a meaningful keepsake students can return to for many years to come!
The class will be taught using watercolors on mixed media paper, allowing students to clearly see how colors mix, shift, and interact. While watercolor is our teaching medium, the skills learned translate directly across all artistic mediums, making this an excellent foundational class for artists of any kind and a great refresher class.
We’ll begin by mixing primary colors to create secondary colors, then expand into tertiary colors, helping students visually understand how colors relate to one another on the color wheel. From there, we’ll explore neutral color mixing, learning how artists create rich grays, browns, and muted tones without relying on black.
Students will also experiment with complementary colors, discovering how colors opposite each other on the wheel interact—how they create contrast, harmony, and vibrancy, and how mixing them together can calm and balance color.
This class is designed to be playful, satisfying, and pressure-free, making it perfect for newer artists as well as more experienced creatives who want to strengthen their fundamentals. The exercises are intuitive and often lead to those exciting “aha” moments that immediately elevate work in painting, drawing, mixed media, and beyond.
