Photography literally means drawing with light, from the Greek words phōs (light) and graphē (drawing or writing). Understanding how light behaves and influences an image is one of the most powerful skills a photographer can develop.
In the first half of this workshop, we'll explore the characteristics of light and how these influence the photographs we create. We'll examine natural and artificial light sources, the direction and intensity of light, its color, and the difference between hard and soft light. Through photographic examples, we'll discover how these qualities influence mood, dimension, texture, and visual impact.
In the second half, we'll put those ideas into practice through hands-on experiments. By changing the direction, intensity, and quality of light, you'll see firsthand how the same subject can be transformed, and how understanding light opens up new creative possibilities.
Who is this class for?
No prior photography experience or special equipment is required.
This class if for all levels of experience. Anyone interested in developing a greater awareness of light and learning to use it more intentionally in their photography.
