Ever stare at a blank canvas and not know where to start?
This beginner-friendly acrylic class is all about step one—learning how to plan a painting before the brush ever hits the canvas.
Part 1 focuses on the planning stage of the painting. We’ll create a light underdrawing (sketch) on canvas of an aspen forest with mountains in the background, then begin a tonal, value-based underpainting (see attached photos). The process is broken down into simple, manageable steps—composition, drawing, value, and the first layers of paint—so you can start with clarity and confidence, without rushing or pressure to finish.
You’ll learn how to block in large shapes and light-to-dark values to establish strong structure and direction before moving into color and detail in later stages. A Part 2 continuation class will be offered for those who wish to further develop and refine their painting, but Part 1 is designed to stand on its own and give you a solid foundation to confidently continue working on your piece at home.
